#826: Simple Turkey Chili

I love chili!  My family doesn't love chili mainly because of the beans.  When I served this for dinner Brian tried to inconspicuously pick out all the beans and Chloe declared that she didn't like chili just upon seeing her dinner.  :(  Matthew would only eat the noodles covered in chili but if I tried to give him just the ground beef, he would spit it out.  (Great...another picky eater!)  Fortunately Allison loved this and tried to encourage everyone to eat the beans by telling them "it gives it great flavor!"  Thanks Allison.

Although I totally enjoyed this dinner (as obviously did Allison) there really wasn't anything special to it and if you like heat...this isn't for you.  It was actually a little bland in my opinion.  We doctored ours up with a little shredded cheese, oyster crackers and sour cream (still no heat).  Would I make this again, yes.  Would I make this again over my mom's chili, no.  This recipe would be a good starting off point for you if you like to throw things together and add to a recipe.

1 1/2 teaspoons olive oil
1 pound ground turkey (or lean ground beef)
1 onion, chopped
2 cups water
1 (28 ounce) can canned crushed tomatoes
1 (16 ounce) can canned kidney beans - drained, rinsed, and mashed
1 tablespoon garlic, minced
2 tablespoons chili powder
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

Heat the oil in a large pot over medium heat. Place turkey in the pot, and cook until evenly brown. Stir in onion, and cook until tender.

Pour water into the pot. Mix in tomatoes, kidney beans, and garlic. Season chili powder, paprika, oregano, cayenne pepper, cumin, salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer 30 minutes.

If I figured this out correctly, if you divide the chili into 6 servings (which actually isn't a whole lot) it would be 4 ww+ pts per serving (not including noodles, or any extra toppings).

  1. Ah yes, the infamous 'beans in chili' debate. The dark red beans sitting on top look nice actually.

"if I tried to give him just the ground beef, he would spit it out" Wasn't it a turkey chili? You've even labeled it ground beef. ☜
